The wick

Cotton wicks, not metal cores

The wick is the only engine in the jar. We write the size in ink. We do not guess.

A Hartisans candle on the scale with handwritten wick notes

Every Hartisans candle has a lead-free cotton wick. In the kitchen that is usually an Eco 12 or a CD 24 — the number changes with the vessel and the oil. Grams on the scale. Wick in the margin. The paper stays under the jar like a promise.

A wick that is too large mushrooms and walks. A wick that is too small tunnels even if you did the first burn. Fragrance load, vessel width, and soy all pull on that choice. That is why we burn-test before an oil is for sale.

Wooden sticks in our pour photos hold the wick true while the soy is gold. They are not the wick.
